49erFX National Champions!

We won the (first-ever) 49erFX US National Championships!

The event began on Thursday with the official opening of Oakcliff Sailing Center as a US Sailing Team Sperry Top-Sider Training Center. We look forward to training out of Oyster Bay to round out our experience in various conditions.
We did two races each on Saturday and Sunday. Then today we did three more races plus a final medal race that counted for double points and was non-discardable.
Results here.
The whole regatta was quite light (3-8 knots for the most part) with plenty of shifts to keep us on our toes. The race committee did a great job of getting races off in the best breeze of the day and keeping the races fair.

Congratulations to Brad Funk & Trevor Burd for winning the 49er fleet, and to Enrique Figueroa and Carla Malatrasi for besting the Nacra 17s!

Thank you to Hunt & Betsy Lawrence, Dawn Riley, Jay Kehoe, and the many Oakcliff volunteers for their incredibly generous support – without which, there would be no Oakcliff, no Oakcliff fleet(s) of FXs, 49ers, and Nacra 17s, and definitely no National Championship on Oyster Bay. We were extremely lucky to use a new Oakcliff boat and mast at both CORK (last week) and Nationals, in addition to new sails at Nationals. Your support is tremendous and we can’t thank you enough.

Thank you to our coaches: Luther Carpenter, Pete Spaulding, Trevor Moore, and Hans Henken. Our training has not been “plentiful” but it has definitely been efficient and effective.
As always, thank you to Sperry-Top Sider. It was a pleasure to see the Sperry folks at the Oakcliff/US Sailing opening celebration on Thursday.

We’re heading back to SF/SD for work/school for the next couple of weeks, then on to Marseille for the World Championships!
